ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY AND STRUCTURAL ABLEISM: A SOCIOTECHNICAL ANALYSIS IN THE INCLUSION OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Abstract

This study proposes a critical reflection on the duality of Assistive Technologies (ATs) in the face of structural ableism. It aims to discuss how the design and implementation of these innovations can reinforce a logic of "correction" of the subject instead of prioritizing the elimination of social and environmental barriers. The methodology consists of a narrative literature review (2015-2024), based on databases such as SciELO and Google Scholar, as well as a documentary analysis of the Brazilian Inclusion Law (LBI) and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The results reveal that, although the advancement of Artificial Intelligence offers unprecedented horizons of autonomy, its effectiveness is mitigated by algorithmic biases that automate exclusion by neglecting human functional diversity. It was observed that the absence of universal design guidelines in systems architecture converts potential empowerment tools into new mechanisms of segregation and invisibility. It is established that confronting ableism in the digital age requires a paradigm shift in technological development, making it imperative for algorithmic governance to incorporate accessibility by design. Effective inclusion depends on recognizing disability not as a systemic error, but as a legitimate expression of human diversity.
