UTILIZATION OF MAIZE RESIDUAL BIOMASS IN THE SÃO MIGUEL DO ARAGUAIA WATERSHED

Abstract

Maize plays a significant role in the Brazilian agroeconomic landscape, standing out not only for its production volume but also for the generation of residues with potential for energy recovery. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the potential use of maize residual biomass in the São Miguel do Araguaia microregion, with emphasis on estimating the energy potential associated with the crop and identifying the use that best optimizes the raw material. The research was conducted based on official data from IBGE, Conab, and BDE-Goiás, employing a quantitative methodology to estimate the available straw biomass, considering agronomic parameters and technical criteria for sustainable collection. Subsequently, calculations were performed to determine the Lower Heating Value (LHV) and the electrical power generation potential for each municipality. The results indicate that maize residual biomass constitutes a significant energy source; however, the amount of energy generated from this biomass is not sufficient to meet the total electricity demand of the microregion. In light of this, the study identified the feasibility of implementing a Briquette Management Center, which represents a viable alternative for adding economic value to agricultural production, promotes the energy use of compacted straw in the form of briquettes, and contributes to mitigating environmental impacts associated with improper residue management in the field. Thus, despite its limitations, maize can still serve as a complementary alternative in the local energy matrix, contributing to the valorization of agricultural residues and encouraging sustainable practices in rural areas.
