SUSTAINABLE AND ORGANIC STRATEGIES FOR THE CONTROL OF GASTROINTESTINAL PARASITES IN GOATS AND SHEEP

Organic and sustainable production of goats and sheep has gained proeminence as a viable alternative to conventional systems, mainly due to the increasing consumer demand for chemical-free food products and reduced environmental impact. In this context, the control of gastrointestinal parasites represents one of the main sanitary challenges, especially due to the limitations on the use of synthetic anthelmintics. This study aims to discuss sustainable strategies applied to parasite control in small ruminants, focusing on practices compatible with organic systems. The methodology was based on a qualitative literature review, using scientific articles, books, and technical documents published in recent years. Among the main approaches, rotational grazing management, the use of plants with anthelmintic properties, genetic selection of resistant animals, and integration with agroecological systems stand out. The results demonstrate that these strategies, when applied in an integrated manner, significantly contribute to reducing parasite burden, improving productive performance, and promoting animal welfare. It is concluded that the adoption of sustainable practices in parasite control is essential for the viability of organic goat and sheep production, and that greater dissemination of technical knowledge and incentives for applied research in this field are necessary.
