THE ROLE OF THE PSYCHOLOGIST AT APAE: REFLECTIONS BASED ON INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

Abstract

This study aims to reflect on the contributions of the internship carried out at the Association of Parents and Friends of Exceptional Children (APAE) to the understanding of the psychologist's role in institutions serving people with disabilities. The experience was built through observation of clinical care, participation in institutional activities, and monitoring of educational actions aimed at promoting health and inclusion. The theoretical framework was based on references from Social and Community Psychology, which highlight the importance of social, family, and institutional interactions in the constitution of identity and psychological well-being. The methodology adopted was qualitative, with recording of experiences and reflective analysis of practices. The results indicate that the psychologist's role goes beyond individual care, including mediation between school and family, building bonds, and promoting social inclusion. Activities such as equine therapy, sensory garden, and awareness lectures proved relevant for integrating care, education, and inclusion. The importance of multidisciplinary work for greater effectiveness in monitoring is also highlighted. In conclusion, psychologists act as agents of transformation, strengthening support networks and contributing to holistic development and a more inclusive society.
