GLOBAL OVERVIEW OF ANIMAL DISEASE OUTBREAKS REPORTED TO THE WORLD ORGANISATION FOR ANIMAL HEALTH (2025–2026)

The occurrence of animal disease outbreaks represents an important challenge for global animal health, with direct impacts on livestock production, international trade of animal products, and sanitary security. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the occurrence of animal disease outbreaks reported worldwide between 2025 and 2026. Secondary data were obtained from the surveillance system of the World Organization for Animal Health through its international platform for reporting sanitary events. A total of 148 animal disease outbreaks were identified across different regions of the world. Europe accounted for the largest proportion of notifications, with 82 outbreaks (55.4%), followed by Asia and Africa (26 each; 17.6%). In the Americas, 9 outbreaks were reported in South America (6.1%) and 8 in North America (5.4%), while Oceania recorded only one event (0.7%). Among the countries with the highest number of notifications were Poland, Germany, and the United Kingdom. A wide variety of diseases were reported, with Avian Influenza being the most frequent, accounting for 46 outbreaks (31.1%), followed by Bluetongue, Foot-and-Mouth Disease, Anthrax, and Sheep and Goat Pox. The findings highlight the broad geographic distribution of animal disease outbreaks and the predominance of viral diseases with significant sanitary impact. These results reinforce the importance of international surveillance systems for monitoring animal health and strengthening strategies for the prevention and control of diseases on a global scale.
