Abstract

The objective of this study was to address general aspects of the use of cellular devices in higher education. A bibliographic literature search was carried out, using the Science Direct, Scopus, Reserchgate and Scielo databases, using the following subjects: ICTs in higher education, impact of the use of technological devices in the classroom, teachers' perception and students about the use of active methodologies within the classroom, application of games and teaching material in student learning, these terms were also transposed into English to increase the scope of articles found on the topic. Regarding the possession of smartphones, it was identified that in more than (80%) of the studies analyzed, students had one, results similar to those with a higher percentage among men compared to women. As for professional areas, 90.0% of health areas have a cell phone, 87.7% of administrative, accounting and economic sciences, 86.8% of agricultural sciences and 82.8% of education and social sciences. Young people aged 17 to 25 are the ones who use smartphones the most, however, as they get older, this percentage decreases. When the use of cell phones in academic activities by professors was analyzed, less than 40% of professors occasionally use smartphones in academic activities, which reflects the prevalence of digital immigrants among university professors. According to the results of this research, smartphones continue to be the most used devices both for using applications and searching for information among students.
